A pneumatic diaphragm pump—more formally an air-operated double diaphragm(AODD)pump—is chosen because it can handle corrosive chemicals, abrasive slurries, viscous fluids, and even run dry without damage. But none of those advantages matter if the wetted materials are wrong. The most common cause of premature failure is not the pump brand or size;it is specifying a body, diaphragm,or valve part that is incompatible with the actual fluid.
Material selection has to be done for the entire wetted path, not just the pump casing. The fluid touches the body, diaphragms, check balls,seats,O-rings,and sometimes the manifold. The pump fails at its weakest wetted component.
1.Start with the fluid profile
Before looking at material names, write down what the pump will actually see in service:
•Chemical composition—acid,alkali,solvent,oil,water-based,food product
•Concentration—10%acetic acid and glacial acetic acid are different jobs
•pH range, including seasonal or batch variation
•Temperature—operating temperature,not ambient
•Viscosity—affects ball seating,suction lift,and cycle rate
•Solids content—size,shape,hardness,percentage
•Duty cycle—continuous,intermittent,deadhead,batch transfer
•Hygiene or certification needs—FDA,3-A,EHEDG,ATEX
A material that is fine at 20°C can swell, soften,or crack at 80°C.Always select against the worst realistic operating condition, not the average.
2.Pump body/wetted housing materials
Polypropylene(PP)
Low-cost plastic body for many acids, alkalis, and water-based chemicals.Good for general chemical duty, but limited temperature and impact resistance.
Use for:diluted acids,caustic solutions,mild chemical transfer
Avoid:strong solvents depending on grade, high temperature, flammable service unless conductive version
PVDF/Kynar
Much broader chemical resistance than PP,especially for stronger acids, halogens, and many solvents.More expensive, but often the standard choice for aggressive chemical service.
Use for:strong acids,electroplating chemicals,aggressive transfers
Avoid:where cost is the deciding factor for mild duty
PTFE body
Near-universal chemical resistance.Usually specified only for the most aggressive fluids because cost is high.
Use for:aggressive acids,solvents,high-purity service
Note:check temperature and mechanical stress limits by model
Aluminum
Light, economical metal body for neutral fluids, paints, solvents compatible with aluminum, and general industrial duty.
Use for:paints,inks,oils,neutral water,non-corrosive solvents
Avoid:salt water,acidic/alkaline fluids, chlorides, halogenated solvents that may react with aluminum
Cast iron/ductile iron
Rugged and economical for abrasive,non-corrosive fluids.Ductile iron is common in wastewater and filter-press duty.
Use for:sludge,abrasive slurries,neutral industrial fluids
Avoid:corrosive chemicals
316 stainless steel
The default for food, pharmaceutical, sanitary, and moderately corrosive duty.Good mechanical strength, cleanable, groundable.
Use for:food,beverage,pharma,CIP,mildly corrosive chemicals
Note:not immune to chlorides, hydrochloric acid,or strong sulfuric acid at high concentration
3.Diaphragm and elastomer selection
The diaphragm is the key wear part.It must combine chemical resistance with flex life.A chemically perfect material that cracks from fatigue,or a flexible material that dissolves in solvent, will both fail early.
PTFE/Teflon
Broadest chemical resistance:acids,caustics,solvents,ketones,chlorinated compounds.
•Pros:almost universal chemical resistance
•Cons:stiff, lower flex life alone, poorer abrasion resistance, often needs elastomer backup
Best for:aggressive chemicals,pure solvents,high-purity duty
Avoid:highly abrasive slurries with sharp particles unless validated
Santoprene/TPE
General-purpose thermoplastic elastomer with good flex life and moderate chemical resistance.
Best for:water-based fluids,mild acids/alkalis,detergents,abrasive slurries
Avoid:aromatic hydrocarbons,strong solvents,oils depending on formulation
EPDM
Excellent for water, steam, dilute acid/alkali,alcohols,and sanitary CIP duty.
Best for:water treatment,food/pharma,caustics,hot water
Avoid:oils,diesel,gasoline,hydrocarbons
NBR/Buna-N
Good oil and fuel resistance, good flexibility and abrasion behavior in many industrial slurries.
Best for:oils,fuels,hydraulic fluid,petroleum-based fluids
Avoid:strong acids,ketones,ozone-heavy environments
FKM/Viton
Strong hydrocarbon,fuel,and high-temperature resistance.
Best for:fuels,aromatic solvents,high-temperature chemical duty
Avoid:ketones,acetone,MEK,hot caustic,steam
Neoprene
Economic general-purpose elastomer for mild duty.
Best for:water,seawater,mild chemicals,outdoor duty
Avoid:strong oxidizers,aggressive solvents
4.Check balls and seats are easy to forget
Even with a correct body and diaphragm, the pump can leak or lose prime if the balls and seats are wrong.
Rules of thumb:
•Clean chemicals:PTFE balls/seats with PTFE diaphragm
•Oils/hydrocarbons:NBR seats,stainless or steel balls
•Abrasive slurries:harder seats—stainless,ceramic,tungsten carbide—and abrasion-resistant diaphragm
•High viscosity:heavier balls close faster;light Santoprene balls may float
•Food/pharma:FDA-grade elastomers,polished stainless,easy-clean geometry
5.Match material to application type
For acid transfer involving hydrochloric or sulfuric acid and sodium hydroxide, polypropylene or PVDF bodies paired with PTFE diaphragms are typical, but concentration and temperature must be verified carefully.Solvent transfer—such as acetone, toluene,or isopropyl alcohol—usually requires PVDF,stainless steel,or acetal bodies with PTFE diaphragms, and aluminum should be checked for reactivity with specific solvents. When handling oils and fuels like diesel, lubricants,or hydraulic oil, aluminum, cast iron,or stainless steel bodies work well with NBR diaphragms;EPDM should be avoided entirely for these fluids.
In water treatment applications where polymers and mild chemicals are pumped, polypropylene or aluminum bodies combined with EPDM or Santoprene diaphragms offer an economical solution. For abrasive slurries containing sand, grit,or ceramic slip, cast iron or 316 stainless steel bodies with Santoprene diaphragms and hard balls/seats provide the necessary wear resistance. In food and pharmaceutical service—including sauces,CIP solutions, and active pharmaceutical ingredients—316 stainless steel bodies with EPDM or PTFE diaphragms meeting FDA or 3-A standards are required. Finally, for paint and coating applications such as inks, varnish, and adhesives, aluminum or stainless steel bodies with PTFE or Santoprene diaphragms are suitable, provided solvent compatibility is confirmed.
6.Special conditions that change the choice
Abrasion
If the fluid contains sand, glass fines, metal flakes,or crystalline solids, chemical resistance alone is not enough.PTFE may chemically survive but can be cut by sharp particles.Use Santoprene or reinforced elastomer diaphragms and harder valve parts.
Temperature
Higher temperature accelerates chemical attack and reduces elastomer life.Plastics may creep;rubbers may soften.Above~100°C,PTFE,FKM,or metal construction becomes more relevant.
Viscosity
Viscous fluids reduce suction lift and slow ball seating.Use larger ports, heavier balls, softer seats,or flap/cone valves for sludge and slurry.
Explosive/ATEX areas
Plastic pumps can accumulate static. For flammable solvents, use conductive bodies, conductive diaphragms, bonded metal parts, and proper grounding.
Dry-run and deadhead
AODD pumps tolerate both, but material choice still matters—diaphragm flex life governs maintenance interval more than body corrosion in many cases.
7.Practical selection checklist
1.Identify every chemical in the fluid, including trace solvents
2.Record max concentration and max temperature
3.Note pH swing, not just average pH
4.Estimate solids size and hardness
5.Choose body material for corrosion+pressure+hygiene
6.Choose diaphragm for chemical+flex-life balance
7.Choose balls/seats for chemical+abrasion+viscosity
8.Confirm seals/O-rings match the same fluid
9.Check ATEX/static requirements if flammable
10.Validate against manufacturer chemical-compatibility chart
If the fluid is unusual, immersion testing is the safe final step:place samples of the candidate diaphragm and body material in the actual fluid at operating temperature for several days and check for swelling, weight change, cracking,or hardening.
Key principle
Do not default to"PTFE everywhere."PTFE is chemically safest but not always mechanically best. For many water-based,abrasive,or oil-service applications,Santoprene,EPDM,or NBR will last longer and cost far less.
The correct selection is the combination where:
body resists corrosion→diaphragm resists chemistry+fatigue→balls/seats resist wear→seals match fluid→certifications fit the process
When all five align, the pump runs longer, leaks less, and avoids the expensive mistake of replacing diaphragms every few weeks.
